The Honduras trip is a unique opportunity open to all pharmacy students. Under the direction of Dr. Steve Crossman, VCU Medical
students and health care providers set up a free clinic in a school for the residents of Pineras, an indigent community in the
Honduras.
When is the trip?
First 2 weeks of June.
What will students do in Honduras?
There are two possible villages you may be assigned to; each has different population needs. One objective is to provide
direct medical care to patients, but students may also work on more community-wide health concerns like water purification systems or sanitation. This is a rural area with limited resources. Students should be flexible and willing to help in any way that is
needed.
How can a student prepare to go?
Students selected for this trip must enroll in a one-hour elective course that meets on four Saturday mornings during the spring
semester. Topics in this course review disease states and treatment options common to Honduras. This course also reviews issues of
cultural competency and global health.
How much will it cost?
Students participate in group fund-raising efforts during the spring semester to help defer costs. The group efforts typically
fund-raise about $650 per brigade member to cover in-country trip and food costs. Each student is responsible for the cost of
flight (tentatively around $500), passport, and required vaccines (most of which are available through student health).
