Soniya Vaidya, PCEU graduate student, received a 2008 American Association of Pharmceutical Scientists (AAPS) Graduate Student Symposium Award from the PharmaSoniyaVaidya4.jpgcokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metablism Section of AAPS, the Clinical Pharmacology and Translational Research Section of AAPS and Eli Lilly and Company. The program is designed to recognize excellence in graduate education in these fields. Soniya will present her research at the AAPS Annual Meeting and Exposition to take place November 16-20, 2008 in Atlanta, Georgia. Congratulations, Soniya!



PCEU Combined Degree Student Awarded Dissertation Year Award
DavidLee.jpg David S. Lee, PharmD, PhD candidate, received the Southern Regional Education Board's (SREB) Doctoral Scholars Dissertation Year Award. The SREB is part of a nationwide initiative, The Compact for Faculty Diversity, to produce more minority PhD's and to encourage them to seek faculty positions. The Dissertation Year Award will include a one-year package of direct program support (one year of tuition and fees, a $15,000 stipend, a $500 research allowance) and expenses associated with attending the Compact for Faculty Diversity's Annual Institute on Teaching and Mentoring. Congratulations, David!

VCU-AAPS Student Chapter Receives PPDM Education Travelship Funding
The Pharmacokinetics, Pharmacodynamics, and Drug Metabolism (PPDM) Education Initiative, supported by the American Association of Pharmaceutical Scientists (AAPS), awarded the Department of Pharmaceutics' VCU-AAPS Student Chapter with a $1000 travelship to be used toward travel and lodging expenses in support of hosting an invited speaker/visiting scientist. Stay tuned for more information on the invited speaker/visiting scientist itinerary in 2008.

Pharmaceutics Welcomes New Faculty Member
SweetPic.jpgPlease welcome the newest faculty member in the Department of Pharmaceutics, Dr. Douglas H. Sweet. Dr. Sweet joined the Department on April 1, 2008. Prior to his appointment at VCU, Dr. Sweet was an Assistant Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Sciences at the Medical University of South Carolina, Charleston, SC. Dr. Sweet obtained a PhD in Biology from the University of Michigan, Ann Arbor. His major field of research is in Comparative Physiology and Toxicology of Epithelial Transport.
