Appointments
Mary Jayne Kennedy, Pharm.D. joined the Department in January 2009 as an Assistant Professor of Pharmacy on the tenure
track. Prior to her appointment at VCU, she was an Assistant Professor of Pediatrics and Pharmacology/Toxicology at the
University of Lousiville School of Medicine and served as the Associate Director of the Kosair Charities Pediatric Clinical
Research Unit. During her tenure in Louisville, she received funding from the NIH to support her work in the area of
aminoglycoside urinary proteomics and she has received national recognition from the American Society of Nephrology for her
preliminary work in this area.
Lisa Phipps, Pharm.D., Ph.D. joined the School of Pharmacy/Department of Pharmacy faculty as an
Assistant Professor of Pharmacy in the Fall of 2008 on the collateral track. Dr. Phipps received her
Pharm.D. and Ph.D. degrees from Virginia Commonwealth University, and completed a post-doctoral fellowship
at VCU. She is responsible for the Scholarship Sequence with the new curriculum, coordinating the Evidence
Based Pharmacy course, and will co-coordinate the Drug Literature Evaluation Course with Dr. Spencer
Harpe.
Tyler Stevens, Pharm.D. joined the faculty as an Assistant Professor on the collateral track. Dr. Stevens
received his residency in Community Pharmacy and has directed the clinical pharmacy services at Buford Road
Pharmacy in Richmond. He will be primarily responsible for the clinical education of students in the Skills
Laboratory.
Benjamin van Tassell, Pharm.D. joined the faculty in the Department of Pharmacy in the summer of 2008 as
an Assistant Professor on the tenure track. Dr. van Tassell has received his fellowship in cardiology from
the University of Utah.
Leticia “Tish” Moczygemba, Pharm.D., PhD. joined the VCU faculty in the Department of Pharmacy in the
summer of 2008 as an Assistant Professor on he tenure track. Dr. Moczygemba received her Pharm.D., and Ph.D.
in Pharmacy Administration from the University of Texas (Austin).
Akash Alexander, Pharm.D., joined the faculty in the Department of Pharmacy in the fall of 2008 as an
Assistant Professor of Pharmacy on he collateral track. Dr. Alexander completed his residency in the
Community Pharmacy program at VCU and will be establishing a clinical service and educational experience for
P-4 students at CVS Pharmacy in Richmond. The position is co-funded between CVS and the School of Pharmacy.
Dr. Gretchen Brophy has been appointed to the ACCP committee: Credentials: Membership
Committee during 2008-2009.
Dr. Evan Sisson, Chair of the AADE Planning and Development Committee - One of three
leadership positions on the AADE Board of Directors, this strategic planning committee is
responsible for ongoing evaluation of the organization’s strategic direction and evaluation
of individual program contribution to the AADE mission. A primary role of the committee chair
is to ensure integration and congruence between the annual budget planning process
(consisting of $11 million) and the strategic initiatives of the organization.
William E. Smith, Pharm.D., MPH, PhD, Executive Associate Dean was appointed to the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ)
National Advisory Council; he is the first pharmacist to be named to the council.
Gretchen Brophy, Pharm.D., BCPS, FCCP, FCCM, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, has been appointed to the Distinguished Investigator
Committee (2008 –2011) of the American College of Critical Care Medicine.
Gretchen Brophy, Pharm.D., BCPS, FCCP, FCCM, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, has been appointed to the Neurocritical Care
Society Clinical Guidelines Steering Committee (2008).
Patty Slattum, Pharm.D., PhD, Associate Professor of Pharmacy, was appointed to the editorial board of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics
Annie Cheang, Pharm.D., Assistant Professor of Pharmacy, was appointed to the American College of Clinical Pharmacy Research Institute
as an ad hoc grant reviewer to serve a 3-year term.
Bonny L. Bukaveckas PhD, FACB, Assistant Professor of Pharmacy has been appointed to serve on the National Advisory Council for
Intermountain Healthcare Clinical Genetics Institute.
Recognition
Joseph L. McClay of the VCU School of Pharmacy along with Xiangdong Chen of the University of Virginia's Department of Pharmacology have been named 2009 NARSAD Young Investigator Award winners. The National Alliance for Research on Schizophrenia and Depression is considered the world's leading charity for mental-health research.
Kai I (Annie) Cheang received the Elizabeth Fries Award at the Women’s Health Conference on April 15, 2009. This was the First Place award for Dr. Cheang’s study of the effects of OCPs on metabolic and endocrine parameters in lean versus obese normal women.
Don Brophy, Pharm.D., Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine received the VCU School of Pharmacy Teacher of the Year Award.
Gary R. Matzke, Pharm.D., Professor of Pharmacy and Associate Dean for Research and Public Policy, and Don Brophy, Pharm.D.,
Associate Professor of Pharmacy and Medicine have been named Fellows of the American Society of Nephrology (FASN).
William Garnett, Pharm.D., Professor of Pharmacy had his contributions to the understanding of epilepsy highlighted at a
celebration on April 25, 2008 at the Lewis Ginter Botanical Gardens, Richmond, VA.
The APhA Foundation has recognized the Ukrop's (Grocery) Pharmacy Immunization initiative in Richmond, Virginia by awarding
the program a 2008 Pinnacle Awards in the Group Practice Category. The program was spearheaded by Dr. Kelly Goode,
Professor of Pharmacy.
Gary R. Matzke, Pharm.D., Professor of Pharmacy and Associate Dean for Research and Public Policy is serving as President of
the ACCP through the 2008 annual meeting of ACCP. In addition, he has been elected Chair of the Council of Faculties of the
AACP and will assume this responsibility at the July 2008 Annual Meeting of AACP.
Awards
Kimberly A. Cappuzzo, Pharm.D., M.S., CGP, Assistant Professor, was awarded the 2008 AFPE-RPS Pharmacy Faculty Development Fellowship
in Geriatric Pharmacy/Geriatric Pharmaceutical Science. The stipend of $25,000 is matched by VCU to support a minimum
6-month faculty development fellowship.
Patty Slattum, Pharm.D., PhD is the first pharmacist to receive the William B. Abrams Award in Geriatric Clinical Pharmacology
at the 2008 ASCPT Annual meeting on April 2, 2008 in Orlando.
Patty Slattum, Pharm./D., Ph.D. was recognized as the School of Pharmacy Alumni Star during commencement weekend and at a private
reception for Alumni Stars on May 17, 2008.
Dr. Amy Whitaker received the 2008 Pharmacy Alumni Service Award from the MCV Alumni Association on April 12, 2008.
Grants
Edwin van den Oord, Ph.D., Professor of Pharmacy is the Principal Investigator on a new RO1 award from NHGRI,
"Design and analysis of adaptive multistage genetic association studies", Period: April 2008-April 2011, Total award amount; $900,000
Sallie Mayer, Pharm.D., Assistant Professor, Evan Sisson, Pharm,.D., Assistant Professor and Brigitte Sicat,
Pharm.D. have been awarded a $17,000 grant from the VCU Council for Community Engagement, June 2008.
The project title is, “Education and Care of Patients with Hypertension and Diabetes in a Free Clinic:
Collaboration between VCU School of Pharmacy and Richmond Area High Blood Pressure Center.”
Gretchen Brophy, JR Robles and Perry Taylor: Evaluation of Recombinant Activated Factor VII Use in
Patients with Intracranial Hemorrhage. Novo Nordisk. 1 year, $45,691 total budget. Start date: 1/2008.

The Geriatric Pharmacotherapy Program has received a grant for $12,744 from the Virginia Center on Aging
to produce and deliver to pharmacists located in rural areas of Virginia a continuing education program entitled
"Medication Therapy Management in Older Persons".
James Zhang, Ph.D., is a sub-recipient on a CDC grant to study disparity in ectopic pregnancy outcomes ($16,602).

of patients with sickle cell diseases ($7,339).
Bonny L. Bukaveckas PhD, FACB, Assistant Professor, received the third and final year of funding for the SmartWarf
project, "Personalized Medicine, Anticoagulation Treatment", Gustavus and Louise Pfeiffer Research Foundation,
$75,000, July 1, 2008.
