Preceptor Awards

Congratulations and thank you to all 2016-2017 Preceptor Award Recipients!

The Preceptor of the Year Award is presented annually to recognize an exemplary preceptor of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experiences (APPE) who has demonstrated a history of excellent precepting of student pharmacists. Criteria for the award include sustained contributions and service to the mission of the School of Pharmacy for at least five years as a preceptor to many students and nominations by students based on outstanding preceptor criteria. Comments shared here were submitted by students spanning almost two decades.

The Preceptor of the Year Award Recipient for 2016-2017 is:

Neil Davis, PharmD

Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital

Acute Care I/General Medicine APPE; Acute Care II/Critical Care APPE

Preceptor since 1998

Some nominators since 1998 stated: “He is an excellent teacher, communicator, and certainly a positive role model with well-developed interpersonal skills. I learned so much on this rotation with him and [it] prepared me well for applying for residencies and what to expect during a residency.” … “Our daily activities allowed me to learn so much more than I thought I would and his method of teaching was very effective to allow me to commit things to memory.” … “He would take a substantial amount of time out of his day to have topic discussions and share the many mnemonics he uses to help memorize concepts.” … “He was always willing to answer any questions we had and to explain things that we didn't understand.” … “He consistently demonstrated enthusiasm in teaching and gave constructive feedback throughout the rotation.” … “I appreciate the time Dr. Davis spent to discuss disease states, patient cases, drug therapy, and especially allowing me to have input in the kinetic consults.  I have a deep respect for Dr. Davis in pushing the profession forward and making other health care personnel realize the impact and role of a clinical pharmacist as part of a multi-disciplinary team.” … “Dr. Neil Davis is a shining example of what a preceptor should be.” … “[He] showed me that learning never ends … He is able to convey difficult concepts which anyone would be able to comprehend.” … “I firmly believe that my experience with Neil will change my outlook on pharmacy practice for the rest of my career.” … “He is an outstanding leader in pharmacy!”

Dr. Davis’s comments in part state: “I consider imparting the knowledge that I possess to the next generation of pharmacists following in my footsteps to be my obligation. It is a priority that I incorporate into my practice on a daily basis. As  graduating pharmacists, it is now your obligation to mold future professionals.”

The Outstanding Preceptor Award
recognizes a preceptor of Advanced Pharmacy Practice Experience (APPE) rotations who has demonstrated excellent precepting of at least two student pharmacists each year for at least two consecutive years and is nominated by students based on outstanding preceptor criteria.  Selection of multiple recipients each year ensures a broad recognition of the valuable contributions of many excellent preceptors who enable approximately 1,100 APPE rotations across nine APPE rotation blocks in six regions of the Commonwealth and out-of-state, too.  Comments shared here were submitted by the Class of 2017.

The Outstanding Preceptor Award recipients for 2016-2017 are:

"Beverlee is a very hard-working and enthusiastic pharmacist. She loves to learn and pass on her knowledge to her students. She assigns projects and uses that opportunity to discuss her experiences but she also assigns projects that allow her students to teach her things.” … “I can tell Beverlee is passionate about pharmacy.”

Mark Bernas, PharmD

McGuire VA Medical Center - Richmond

Acute Care I/General Medicine APPE

Preceptor since 2011

“Dr. Bernas gave great feedback and built up and helped guide me from someone who was hesitant and a bit nervous of working with physicians to being comfortable and open to speaking and offering suggestions, as well as having opportunities to engage in auscultations and other patient assessment techniques [and] provide an in-service to the medical team about direct oral anticoagulants [and] counsel patients on medication use and adherence.”

Elisa Burton, RPh, BCPP

Central Virginia Training Center – Lynchburg

Acute Care II/Psychiatric Pharmacy APPE

Preceptor since 2007

“The rotation is very well laid out thanks to the organization and determination of the preceptor. All of her interactions with patients and other staff are very professional in ultimately helping contribute to the profession and deliver the best of patient care. Mrs. Burton puts everything she can into committing to a life of lifelong learning and it is admirable to see the passion that she imparts on the pharmacy world on a daily basis.”

Alexis Crawford, PharmD, BCPS

Bon Secours Memorial Regional Medical Center - Richmond

Acute Care II/Critical Care APPE

Preceptor since 2013

Alexis was by far the best preceptor I have ever interacted with. She was always enthusiastic and very knowledgeable. She encouraged us to learn more by assigning daily homework questions that came up during rounds that we may not have known about before.  Alexis is a great teacher - she clearly enjoys it and wanted to be there for us. She was approachable and offered us assistance in any aspect that we may need …

Marjan Daneshmand, PharmD

Virginia Hospital Center Outpatient Pharmacy and Clinic

Introductory Community Pharmacy IPPE; Advanced Community Pharmacy APPE; Ambulatory Care APPE

Preceptor since 2009

“Dr. Daneshmand is very dedicated and passionate about the profession. She gave me great guidance throughout my rotation, and I learned a lot from her. Dr. Daneshmand is very organized, and was accessible at all times.” … “She really does respect students and truly helps students to learn and improve …”

Rachel Flurie, PharmD, BCPS

VCU School of Pharmacy/VCU Health System - Richmond

Acute Care I/General Medicine APPE

Preceptor since 2015

“Dr. Flurie is exactly what a pharmacist should be - dedicated to her work, depended on by the team, and always puts the patients first…. [Her] expectations were clear and specific from day one.… We were provided with a schedule and knew what was expected of us for pre-rounding, rounding, mediation histories, DIQs, journal clubs, etc.… Dr. Flurie [discussed] our midpoint and final evaluations [and gave] weekly feedback and feedback after activities.”

Javier Menendez, PharmD, RPh, MBA, CGP

Virginia Premier Health Plan – Richmond

Managed Care Pharmacy Elective APPE

Preceptor since 2013

“Javier is an exceptional preceptor and pharmacist. He has a holistic approach to managed care and truly keeps the patient in mind… He told us the most important thing to remember is to always act in the best interest of the patient, and you cannot go wrong and I believe that to be true as well. He is extremely passionate about what he does and his patient population at VA Premier.” … “Javier exemplifies the type of preceptor everyone should strive to be.”

Rafael Saenz, PharmD, MS

University of Virginia Health System - Charlottesville

Advanced Hospital Pharmacy APPE; Hospital Pharmacy Administration Elective APPE

Preceptor since 2012

“Dr. Saenz expects a lot of his students, which ultimately leads to a productive learning environment that helped me grow immensely. He has a gift for being able to identify the ways in which his students need to be pushed and giving them the opportunity to grow in those ways…. Dr. Saenz sets a strong example of commitment to his profession, institution, department, and job throughout the rotation…. It was awesome and a unique experience…”

Eddie Shibley, RPh, MBA

Plaza Professional Pharmacy/Imperial Plaza – Richmond

Geriatrics APPE

Preceptor since 2001

Eddie wanted to see us succeed. He wanted us to show confidence, self-initiate, and self-direct on doing the tasks or problem solving. He was always there to give you a push when you needed and answer your questions promptly.
