Addington scholarship awarded
Congratulations to Kyle Webb (P4), the seventh School of Pharmacy student to be awarded the Henry Addington for Independent Pharmacy Scholarship.
Henry Addington (B.S. ’51) of Richmond created the scholarship with an eye toward keeping independent pharmacy alive and well. As he has previously noted – and as is even more true in today’s economy -- “Without the financial relief from scholarships, students are already tens of thousands of dollars in debt before they begin practicing pharmacy. They certainly don’t have a way to put down the money needed to open an independent pharmacy.
“I thought this scholarship was one way of giving them a chance.”
During his career, Addington has served as president and vice president for about two dozen independent pharmacies.
Scholarship-recipient Webb says, “I pretty much chose pharmacy because I was always good at math, biology and chemistry and figured that the doctor of pharmacy degree would allow me to put all of those to good use.
“I chose the VCU School of Pharmacy simply because it’s the best in the state.”
When he graduates in May, Webb and his wife plan to return home to the Eastern Shore of Virginia, where he will work for Rayfield’s Pharmacy (primarily at the Nassawadox location).
The Rayfields, by the way, are part of a longstanding School of Pharmacy tradition:
Thomas Rayfield (B.S. ’63) and his wife, Frances, own the Rayfield’s pharmacies in Nassawadox and Cape Charles. Son
Severn Rayfield (B.S. ’92) is a pharmacist in Nassawadox, and his brother,
Berkley Rayfield (B.S. ’96), works at the Cape Charles location. Berkley’s wife,
Joy Wachsmann Rayfield (B.S. ’97), is a pharmacist at Nassawadox.
