VCU School of Pharmacy faculty and students recently headed west for "APhA 2009: Where the Stars of Pharmacy Shine!"
The American Pharmacists Association’s Annual Meeting and Exposition took place April 3-6, 2009, at the Henry B. Gonzalez Convention Center in San Antonio, Texas.
William Garnett and David Holdford were named APhA Academy of Pharmaceutical Research and Science fellows at the meeting. They were two of only nine pharmacists nationwide accorded this honor.
Among faculty participants in continuing education were Jeffrey Delafuente, associate dean for professional education, a presenter for “Delivering Medication Therapy Management Services in the Community” April 3; and Jean Venable “Kelly” Goode, associate professor of pharmacy (B.S. ’89, Pharm.D. ’94), a panelist for “Community Pharmacy Residency Standard: Roundtable Discussion” April 4. Amy Whitaker, assistant professor of pharmacy (Pharm.D. ’98) was a presenter for “Pharmacy Education as a Career” April 6.
Goode is also a member of the APha board of trustees. Along with Lynne M. Roman of Maryland and Kristin W. Weitzel of California, she has edited a new APhA book, “Community Pharmacy Practice Case Studies,” which made its debut during the annual meeting.
Speaking of the future “Stars of Pharmacy” … Lina Saliba (P3) was one of only four students in the country to receive an APhA Student Leadership Award. The leadership awards, endowed by Procter & Gamble Health Care, recognize outstanding academic achievement and leadership ability in APhA-Academy of Students Pharmacists members who are in their next-to-last year of pharmacy school.
Jennifer Austin (P3) was one of only seven students in the country to receive an APhA Foundation Student Pharmacist Scholarship.
Toni Coe (P4) and co-authors presented a poster, “Assessment of Patient Perceptions of Medication Use Problems and Pharmacists Providing Medication Therapy Management Services". Also, Tish Moczygemba, assistant professor of pharmacy, and co-authors presented a poster, “Patient Satisfaction with a Pharmacist-Provided Medicare Part D Telephone Medication Therapy Management Program.”
Also, David DeLong (P4) was a member of the 2008 APhA-ASP National Standing Committee on Awards, and Alexis Noble (P3) is a regional member-at-large. Jon Carter (P3) is 2009-10 vice chairman of the APhA-ASP Policy Committee.
Shine on, SOP!
