Think Academy Awards, Experiential Education-style.

The envelope, please? The School of Pharmacy’s 2008-09 Preceptor of the Year is . . . Eve Bell of HCA Henrico Doctors’ Hospital-Forest in Richmond.

Bell was recognized for her acute care-internal medicine rotation at the annual Preceptor Appreciation & Awards Night April 25, 2009, at Nick’s Roman Terrace Restaurant in Henrico County. She also has been invited to attend the Senior Banquet May 15 at the Greater Richmond Convention Center, where she will receive a Pfizer-sponsored plaque.

Also honored on April 25 as Outstanding Preceptors were:

  • Robert Carson of Ukrop’s Pharmacy, Virginia Center Commons, Richmond (community rotation)
  • Jennifer Chow of Children’s Hospital of the Kings Daughters, Norfolk (acute care-pediatrics rotation)
  • Neil Davis of Sentara Virginia Beach General Hospital, Virginia Beach (acute care-critical care rotation)
  • Michael Dupree of Federal Correction Institution, Petersburg (elective -- infectious disease rotation)
  • Timothy Lucas of DownHome Pharmacy, Roanoke (advanced community rotation)
  • Cherri Mohler of Walgreens Clinic Pharmacy, Chippenham Campus of CJW Medical Center, Richmond (advanced community rotation)
  • Tiffany Ngo of Giant Pharmacy, Fairfax (community rotation)
  • Sheri Ober of Carilion Medical Center, Roanoke (elective -- infectious disease rotation)

Recipients of the 2008-09 Outstanding Mentor Awards were:

  • Faculty: Daniel Tassone of the Inova Campus, Falls Church
  • Nonfaculty: Patricia Pecora Fulco of VCU Health System, Richmond

And the 2008-09 Outstanding Service Award winners were:

  • Joe Hoyle of HealthSouth Rehabilitation Hospital of Virginia, Richmond (geriatric and IPPE hospital rotations)
  • Rodney Stiltner of VCU Health System, Richmond (elective – hospital pharmacy administration rotations and more than 20 IPPE hospital rotations)

In addition to the awards, the evening featured a light dinner and a continuing education program, “The New Curriculum and Its Impact on Experiential Education,” by Beverly Talluto, assistant dean for experiential education.

According to Denise Emminger, program coordinator, the award winners were nominated by APPE rotation students and selected by the Outstanding Preceptor Award Student Committee.

Committee members are appointed by Talluto to include the APPE program coordinator and P4 students from each of the hubs: Richmond, Charlottesville, Inova, Roanoke, Tidewater and Southwest Virginia.

Criteria for the Outstanding Preceptor and Preceptor of the Year awards stipulate that each recipient must “enthusiastically relate information to the students, respect students, promote their critical thinking and inspire students of all abilities to extraordinary accomplishment.”

Recipients of the Outstanding Mentor awards “go above and beyond in counseling the student regarding the opportunities available within the profession and openly offer feedback and knowledge to assist the students along their career path.”

The Outstanding Service Awards go to preceptors who have gone the second mile to assist the Office of Experiential Education and School of Pharmacy with student placements, committee service and so forth. This year, Emminger says, “Both [recipients] went above and beyond in helping to get the IPPE hospital program off the ground.”
