Pharmacy professionals head to the beach
It’s old home week at Virginia Beach for School of Pharmacy alumni, faculty and students. Virginia Pharmacists Association is hosting its 128th Annual Convention at Cavalier Hotel.
Bronwyn Burnham (B.S. ’89) heads up the convention as VPhA president. The president-elect designate is also a School of Pharmacy alum,
Cynthia Warriner (B.S. ’86).
Burnham also led a student pharmacist program on “How to Successfully Prepare and Evaluate Pharmacy Career Opportunities,” and Warriner spoke on “Advocating for the Profession.”
Other alumni participants included:
- Holly Hurley (Pharm.D. ’04), assistant professor of pharmacy practice at Appalachian College of Pharmacy, part of a continuing-education program on “Hot Topics in Pharmacotherapy”
- Rebecca Snead (B.S. ’85), executive vice president and CEO of the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations, presenting a continuing-education session on “Advancing Pharmacy Practice Through Performance Measurement”
- Dennis Stanley (B.S. ’74) of Ukrop’s Pharmacy, presenting a continuing-education session called “Immunization Update” and co-presenting “Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery” with Sharon Gatewood (see below).
SOP faculty scheduled to participate were:

Sharon Gatewood, assistant professor of pharmacy (and also an alumna: B.S. ’97, Pharm.D. ’02), co-presenter of an all-day continuing-education program called “Pharmacy-Based Immunization Delivery.”
- Jeff Delafuente, professor and associate dean for professional education, co-presenting the 2009 Commonwealth Council on Aging Best Practices Award
- Denise Emminger, director of the APPE Program, part of a continuing-education session called “Preceptor Toolkit (Introductory and Advanced)”
- Ellen Leverich, director of development, organizer of the VCU School of Pharmacy Alumni & Friends Reception and SOP’s participation in the Exhibit Hall
The convention, which ends Aug. 5, also featured the annual VphA Foundation Golf Tournament.
