SOP alumni “bring home the gold”

Six School of Pharmacy alumni were lauded for their accomplishments during the Virginia Pharmacists Association’s 128th Annual Convention. Alumni award winners were:
- Preston Hale ( (B.S. ’72): National Community Pharmacists Association Leadership Award. Congratulations to Hale, who also was installed as VPhA president during the convention.
- Holly Hurley (Pharm.D. ’04): Innovative Pharmacy Practice Award
- Greg Large (B.S. ’77): Bowl of Hygeia Award
- Pat Resto (B.S. ’84): Virginia Pharmacist Service Award
- Delaina Richardson (Pharm.D. ’04): Ilene B. Stiff Local Association President’s Award
- Gene White (B.S. ’56): Outstanding Pharmacist Award
Autumn Wells, a Pharm.D. ’03 graduate of Campbell University School of Pharmacy, won the Distinguished Young Pharmacist Award.
VPhA has about 1,400 members. More than 400 people – pharmacists, pharmacy technicians, pharmacy students and exhibitors – attended the Aug. 2-5 convention in Virginia Beach.
More than 80 School of Pharmacy alumni, faculty and students attended the Alumni and Friends Reception Aug. 2, hosted by Dean
Victor Yanchick.
About 24 SOP students were at the convention as part of the Virginia Academy of Student Pharmacists, VPhA’s student affiliate organization.
Amy Dembowski (P3) is 2009-10 president of VASP, and Amy Rudenko, assistant professor in the Department of Pharmacy, is faculty advisor.
Jon Carter (P4), 2008-09 VASP president, received a VPhA Research and Education Foundation Student Award “for demonstrating exceptional service and commitment to the profession of pharmacy during his career at Virginia Commonwealth University School of Pharmacy.”
Team VCU – fourth-year students Alexis Noble, Carrie Ngo, Maria Koumas and
Jennifer Witten – represented the school in the NASPA-NMA Student Pharmacists Self-Care Championship, a “Jeopardy!”-like quiz bowl. The competition was created by the National Alliance of State Pharmacy Associations and the Nonprescription Medicines Academy.
