Stephanie Hammonds

Virginia Commonwealth University (VCU), the American Society of Health-System Pharmacists (ASHP), and the American College of Clinical Pharmacy (ACCP) are please to welcome Stephanie Hammonds, Pharm.D. as the 2008-2009 Pharmacy Healthcare Policy Fellow. The collaborative program was established in 2006 in recognition of the need to foster enhanced experience and training for clinical pharmacists in health care and public policy. The program is designed to give Fellows experience working with the government affairs offices of ACCP and ASHP followed by placement in a Congressional office.

Dr. Hammonds earned her Doctor of Pharmacy degree in 2004 from Purdue University, School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences. Upon graduation, she joined The Johns Hopkins Hospital as a Point of Care Pharmacist, focused largely in pediatric oncology. While at Hopkins she co-founded the Pediatric Pharmacy Safety Committee and served on the USP-797 compliance committee. In 2006 she moved to New York, where she worked at New York Presbyterian Hospital – Weill Cornell Medical Center, primarily in the surgery pharmacy. While in New York, she served as the Interim Chair of the Legislative Action Committee for the New York City Society of the New York State Council of Health System Pharmacists. In September of 2007, she relocated to her hometown, York, Pennsylvania, where she has practiced as a community pharmacist for Target. In addition to her professional responsibilities, she is pursuing her Masters of Public Health in Health Policy and Global Health at The George Washington University in Washington, DC.

Dr. Hammonds noted that, the laws that have deeply impacted health care delivery are frequently passed without full consideration of their repercussions and effect on the end users: patients. She states, “It is my sincere hope that my patient care background will inform macro-level policy analyses and decisions regarding health care and health policy in the United States and it is my privilege to have the opportunity to address these issues through participation in this health care policy fellow program.”
